“THE MOMENT”, sound installation, 12:26’ min loop

Having a uterus and growing up as a cis female Johanna Baschke learned what women are expected to do, how they should act, look and feel. Her work illuminates the inner conflict between insecurity and control, between heteronomy and self-determination, between submissiveness and dominance, between hiding and showing-off. It looks at the challenges faced when trying to deconstruct gender norms and how these can tighten and highlight them simultaneously.

„IF YOU WERE A BOY YOU COULD STAY OUT LATE“, video installation, 26:25’ min loop, projection, color, HD video 16:9

Everybody wears several masks and there is no true self – Sociologist Erwing Goffman looks at the presentation of self from the perspective of the dramatic performance. He shows how people use props, clothes, gestures, words and more to build up and present a certain character that is demanded by rules of class, culture, gender and more. “If you were a boy you could stay out late” exaggerates this performance, precisely the performance of gender, into absurdity. It shows what happens when a performance falls flat. It reveals the personal struggle handling social pressure and the pain ‚we‘ put ourselves through. It makes hiding through masquerade the subject of discussion. The black background as well as the singular light reduce the actions to the essential and refer to a theatrical scenery. How can one let the masks fall?

“SCHAM”, video installation, 26’ min loop, color, HD video 16:9

The myth of the Vagina Dentata is a sign of men’s fear of the female body. At the same time the different stories around it symbolize the power of men to conquer and control it. It is a symbol that warns men about the female sex. A myth about men penetrating women against their will to take out their teeth. A vagina with teeth as a reason for humanities mortality. The vagina, the origin and the ending of the world. “Scham” is mocking this patriarchal myth. It is mocking the famous fear for castration and the sexual supremacy of men. It is also an overcoming of being ashamed of the female genitals.
